Terminology, lexis and phraseology

Patent applications use elements of legal language and style, including some formulaic expressions which appear in all or most patents. We noted above some phrases which often occur in claims, for example characterized by and variants. Other examples of recurrent phrases from our text include:

is associated with

one/another/a further embodiment of the invention

as claimed in claim

in a known manner/in the/a (same/similar) manner (as) previously described/shown

We noted also the use of legalistic adverbs such as wherein, thereof, herein, hereinafter, thereinafter. Patents also reuse other phrases that serve the purpose of organizing the discourse; examples from our text include: as shown in Fig. and indicated by the reference number. If you are translating patents, it is useful to identify sets of these regular and recurrent formulations in your SLs and TLs and familiarize yourself with them so that you can use them in your translations.

Extracting keywords and term candidates from our text (see Chapter 2), the single-word and multi-word terms listed as Excerpt 5.6 emerge as key:
